Abstract
In this paper, we argue that, in order to facilitate the ubiquitous uptake of metadata, and in order to realize their potential for advanced flexible end user functionalities, the metadata should become more transparent to the end user. We also argue that we are technically capable of realizing this goal, and illustrate the issues involved with some practical examples.
